Ephedra Diet Pills - Are They Safe and Effective?

You’ve probably heard about ephedra diet pills that they, "Burn fat while you sleep! Eat whatever you want and still lose weight! Don’t suffer through hours of grueling exercise to burn fat!".

The primary ingredient in fat burners is ephedra, also known as ma huang, or it’s

manufactured version ephedrine. It has been used in Chinese medicine safely and effectively for years. It is often combined with caffeine (e.g. guarana, yerba mate or kola nut) and aspirin (e.g. white willow bark). This is the origin of the term "ECA Stack" when referring to ephedra diet pills.

Do Ephedra Diet Pills Burn Fay?

The answer to that question is yes. Ephedra does effectively help the body to preferentially burn fat for energy. But, according to medical studies, there can be side effects, some of which are quite serious.

How Do Ephedra Diet Pills Work?

Its chemical makeup increases the breakdown of fatty tissue for fuel. Its stimulatory properties help to increase resting metabolism. This process is known as thermogenesis, which is essentially excess heat production. You body burns more calories simply by producing more body heat. When ephedra is combined with caffeine and aspirin, it may have appetite suppressant effects. The nervous system stimulation you get can help you maintain your energy levels, which can aid you in your exercise program.

When used according to instructions and in moderate doses, studies suggest that fat-burning formulas containing ephedra, caffeine and aspirin can be safely and effectively used to SUPPLEMENT a good fat-burning program.

Ephedra Diet Pills should never be used as the sole means to achieve fat loss. A good fat loss program must also address diet and exercise, contrary to the hype you see on television and in print. Anyone who relies solely on pills to lose fat is usually doomed to regain the lost weight and potentially quite rapidly after they stop taking the pills. "I have seen my clients loose 100 pounds using our Metabadrine product, but if they do not take that opportunity to make major lifestyle changes, the weight came back," according to Bob Rutledge, President and CFO of Elation Therapy, Inc in Marietta, GA.

There is a reason for this weight gain. These pills are effective, therefore the person does not necessarily have to change the habits that made them overweight in the first place. When a person discontinues use of ephedra or builds up a tolerance to ephedra without changing those habits, almost inevitably the weight will come back.

The fat-burning effects of ephedra do not come without a price, however. Ephedra has a number of side effects and should not be taken by people with certain conditions.

Some of these side effects may include: jitteriness, sleeplessness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, anxiety, skin flushing or tingling and nausea.

People who should not take ephedra products include those suffering from heart disease, anxiety attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, adrenal disease, thyroid disease or prostate disorders. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure or are taking antidepressants or MAO inhibitors, you should stay away from ephedra. Also, it is not recommended for pregnant women to use this herb.

Now that you know some of the pros and cons of taking ephedra supplements you, along with your doctor, can use this information to help decide whether or not ephedra is right for you.

Was The Ephedra Ban Really a Success?

Ephedra and Ephedrine consumers are still under the assumption that the Ephedra ban is still in place. It probably comes as a great surprise that the ban on Ephedra, one of nature’s most powerful weight loss supplements, was lifted in April of 2005. A Utah Judge overturned the FDA’s decision. So why is it that the most sought after diet pill so difficult to get your hands on? We spoke to four of the top nutritional suppliers. They tell us that the demand is higher than ever. However, they admit they haven’t been following the new ruling. As a result, they missed the boat.

Ephedra has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. However, in the last decade, ephedra products have been thrust into the media spotlight given to high profile lawsuits, the FDA all encompassing ban, and the recent ban reversal.

With all this media attention, you may be wondering what exactly the ephedra product is. Ephedra product is derived from a herbal plant called MaHuang. The main chemical compound in ephedra is ephedrine. Ephedrine is a chemical that simulates the nervous system, dilates bronchial tubes, elevates metabolism and increases heart rate.

People who use the ephedra product may do so for a number of reasons. They use ephedra product to help with asthma, colds, flu, for athletic training or to lose weight. Most users of an ephedra product may experience little to no side effects when taking the recommended dosage. When taking too high a dosage of ephedra based products, one may experience side effects such as:

If you are currently taking an ephedra product or have decided that an ephedra product is right for your life, remember to advise your physician. There is some evidence that suggests ephedra may react negatively with a variety of medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, glaucoma, and hyperthyroidism. You should never take any supplements or medication without your physician knowing. Also, when taking an ephedra product, follow the recommended industry guidelines and do not consume more than is recommended. In retrospect, ephedra products can be safe and quite effective when taken properly.

Ephedra has good and bad side effects. Losing weight and maintaining weight loss are the reported good ephedra side effects.

Serious, unbiased research indicates ephedra has serious safety concerns in high doses (24 mg per dose), more than most herbs and supplements. This does not mean it should be totally banned from the market. Politicians like Dick Durbin and Hillary Clinton have to be consistent in their approach. (No they don't. All they have to do is be "pro abortion". Then they can fool their constituents on every other important issue.)

Even though aspirin and acetaminophen have caused thousands of deaths, they are still on the OTC market. This is not a consistent policy approach indicating their opposition is actually paid for by big drug companies. Ephedra dangers don’t begin to compare to the dangers of smoking and drinking alcohol.

As to safe ephedra supplement doses and minimizing the ephedra side effects, providing some guidelines is quite helpful, and perhaps limiting daily intake to no more than 24 mg a day would be appropriate. Strong emphasis needs to be placed that anyone with a heart condition or other medical problems should not use ephedra.

As to the possibility of rare cases of harm that occur from an ephedra products, that is a risk a free democratic society has to take in order to allow its citizens access to a variety of products. If we were to disallow anything that could potentially harm the public in the long term or short term, we would have to ban sodas, donuts, and even skiing, and parachute jumping. Keep ephedra legal.

Ephedra Products - Are They Safe for Weight Loss?

Ephedra, the most effective weight loss product prior to the FDA's short-lived ban on on it. Some ephedra formulas contain as much as 25 mg's of ephedrine alkaloids. The FDA and most who have tried ephedra prefer 10 mg ephedra products. They make it easier to regulate ephedra (and caffeine) intake.

Up until the short-lived ephedra ban, the industry estimated that 12 million to 17

million Americans were taking around 3 billion doses a year. Why? Because, ephedra, when taken as directed works!

In addition to ephedra's weight-loss benefits, many bodybuilders, athletes and others use this product for its energy properties.

Ephedra also has a diuretic effect and it alters neurotransmission to minimize appetite. The end result is less appetite and a faster metabolism. Some also report that ephedra suppresses appetite.

Recent studies with both humans and laboratory animals have shown ephedrine, the pharmaceutical derivative of ephedra, to be beneficial in promoting weight loss. The main mechanism at work is its thermogenic ability to increase the metabolic rate of adipose tissue thereby enhancing the body's ability to burn fat. Its weight reducing effects are greatest in those who have a low basal metabolic rate. [Tenney, Louise. Today's Herbal Health, 5th edition]

Ma Huang, a variety of ephedra has been used for thousands of years in the Far East in the treatment of colds. Some have used it for sinus problems.

Ephedra also contains fair amounts of such important minerals as zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, iron and potassium as well as the vitamins thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), vitamins A and C. According to Dr. John R. Christopher, the minerals absorbed by ephedra (as well as other plants) are "live, highly vibrating minerals that can be assimilated into the body and used without side effects."

Ephedra is also a blood purifier, it is a popular folk remedy for such conditions as arthritis, rheumatism, bursitis and other painful muscle and joint problems.

Taken as directed, ephedra is a safe, effective and healthy addition to your weight-loss program.

Ephedra products: Not all are the same

There is a difference between ephedrine alkaloids and synthetic ephedrine. Ephedrine is only one of the naturally occurring alkaloids present in Ephedra extracts. Other alkaloids include pseudoephedrine (which is less potent than ephedrine) and alkaloids that slow the absorption of ephedrine from the digestive tract and/or counteract the stimulant effects of the ephedrine in the extracts. However, synthetic ephedrine, which is used in a number of common cold remedies, is not a naturally occurring substance. Synthetic ephedrine can be easily identified on the label of these cold products as "ephedrine hydrocloride."
