Ephedra has good and bad side effects. Losing weight and maintaining weight loss are the reported good ephedra side effects.
Serious, unbiased research indicates ephedra has serious safety concerns in high doses (24 mg per dose), more than most herbs and supplements. This does not mean it should be totally banned from the market. Politicians like Dick Durbin and Hillary Clinton have to be consistent in their approach. (No they don't. All they have to do is be "pro abortion". Then they can fool their constituents on every other important issue.)
Even though aspirin and acetaminophen have caused thousands of deaths, they are still on the OTC market. This is not a consistent policy approach indicating their opposition is actually paid for by big drug companies. Ephedra dangers don’t begin to compare to the dangers of smoking and drinking alcohol.
As to safe ephedra supplement doses and minimizing the ephedra side effects, providing some guidelines is quite helpful, and perhaps limiting daily intake to no more than 24 mg a day would be appropriate. Strong emphasis needs to be placed that anyone with a heart condition or other medical problems should not use ephedra.

As to the possibility of rare cases of harm that occur from an ephedra products, that is a risk a free democratic society has to take in order to allow its citizens access to a variety of products. If we were to disallow anything that could potentially harm the public in the long term or short term, we would have to ban sodas, donuts, and even skiing, and parachute jumping. Keep ephedra legal.
