After the submission of report by RAND corporation, the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine published another study summary that was focused on the comparative studies of adverse effects of ephedra to other adverse effects linked to the consumption of other herbs.
2003
According to this report, ephedra consumption alone contributes to 64% of total adverse health conditions that had been caused by herbs in the year of 2001 in US. This fact had been more startling when ephedra for sales counts for only 1% of total herbal supplements sales.
An unexpected death of Steve Bechler, a pitcher of Baltimore Orioles on 17th February 2003 at young age of 23 years brought ephedra adverse effects into limelight again.
This young pitcher died due to heatstroke at Fort Lauderdale Stadium in Florida after collapsing while doing a workout. The local physician after examining conveyed in his report that Bechler’s ephedra consumption could have been the major reason behind such death. This incident had attracted a great deal of attention by media and considered as main factor that had been instrumental in the announcement done by FDA on December30, 2003.
This announcement had conveyed that FDA was planning to impose ban on all dietary supplements that contain ephedra. Moreover, a consumer alert had been issued by the FDA asking the consumers to restrain from ephedra purchase and its subsequent use. With this announcement, a sharp decline is ephedra use had been observed; however, as there was no ban on non-prescription weight loss pills, containing ephedra or ephedrine, a study had found almost 14% people were still using these pills for weight loss.
2004
Finally, the FDA issued their comprehensive ban on 6th February 2004 through which they banned the sale of all such dietary supplements in United States that contain ephedra. The reason they have clearly mentioned was ” posing an unreasonable risk of injury or illness by such dietary supplements”. This rule came into effect after 60 days of its announcement.
